The Story of Mandala Pies

Mandala Pies started in a tiny Fredericksburg, Virginia apartment in 2017, with a craving for home. Every year since getting married, we traveled to Florida to savor fresh key lime pie. But that year, we couldn’t make the trip. We had just welcomed our son, Branch, into the world, and the journey wasn’t in the cards.

So, Caitlin got to work in our kitchen, testing recipe after recipe until she nailed it. That pie became The Floridian, the same recipe we still bake today.

We soon discovered we could share these pies at local farmers markets, and Mandala Pies was born. Our mission was simple: bake pies that bring people together and add sweetness to their day.

In 2020, we found our way to Vienna, Maryland, and opened our first brick-and-mortar bakery—one week before the world shut down. But we adapted, selling pies out the front window, delivering to porches, and finding ways to keep baking for our community during uncertain times. We hosted 5K races, family events, and even children’s baking classes in that small shop, watching Branch grow up among rolling pins and flour-dusted tables.

In 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Sadie, into the world. And in the fall of 2022, we opened our second location in Berlin, Maryland, expanding our mission to add a slice of sweetness to the Eastern Shore.

Our journey has had its changes—Caitlin and I divorced in 2024, and she sold her shares to me, Mikey. But the heart of Mandala Pies remains bright and clear: family, community, and the simple joy of sharing pie.

We are still veteran-owned and family-run, with Branch and Sadie growing up in the bakeries just like our customers’ kids grow up with birthday pies and weekend treats from our case. We aim to be an asset to our community, to support our neighbors, and to keep baking pies that help you celebrate life’s moments—big and small.
